Makam as structure and phrasing (Ross Daly)
February 24, 2018
Teacher: Ross Daly
One of the most common misconceptions in circulation concerning Modal Musical traditions, and the tradition of Makam in particular, is that modes or Makams are simply an interconnected and intertwining mosaic of scale patterns. To see them in this way is to miss their true essence, which is much more concerned with idiomatic phrasing patterns than it is with mere sequences of tone material (scales). Each Makam, through its unique and characteristic phrasing, gradually reveals itself to us through the medium of the vast repertoire of compositions, which have been created for it by a myriad of illustrious composers of various eras going back many centuries.
Ross Daly, in this seminar will expose to the students the essential phrase material associated with each Makam through the process of group performance and the analyzing of a select repertoire of hallmark compositions in each one.
